So, what’s the deal with 0W-20?

It sounds a bit techy, but it’s fairly straightforward.

That “0W” bit? Think “Winter”. It basically means the oil stays really runny even when it’s freezing cold outside. Proper handy for those frosty British mornings – it gets around your engine sharpish from the moment you turn the key, stopping nasty wear and tear right from the off.

The “20” tells you how thick (or thin, really) the oil is when the engine’s warmed up. Compared to older oils you might remember, like a 10W-40, this 0W-20 is quite a bit thinner. Don’t let that worry you though – it’s exactly what many modern engines are designed for.

Why does your motor care? Quite a few good reasons!

✔️ Saves a bit on petrol. Because it’s thinner, the engine doesn’t have to work as hard to pump it around. Less effort means it sips less fuel. Every little helps, especially with fuel prices being what they are!

✔️ We mentioned the cold start thing – it genuinely makes a difference. Less chugging and grinding on a cold morning, more protection from the get-go.

✔️ Good quality 0W-20 has fancy additives that stop gunk and sludge building up inside your engine. A cleaner engine is generally a happier, longer-lasting engine.

✔️ A smooth-running, efficient engine usually means cleaner emissions, which is always good news come MOT time.

✔️ It’s what the maker intended: Modern engines have really tight tolerances (tiny gaps between parts). This oil is thin enough to get into all those nooks and crannies properly. Using the right stuff keeps your warranty valid too.

Hold your horses though – is 0W-20 definitely for your car?

Now, this is the crucial bit. You absolutely MUST check your car’s handbook first. Don’t just guess or assume! While 0W-20 is common in loads of newer petrol cars (especially Japanese and American ones, plus loads of hybrids and even some modern diesels), it’s not right for everything. Chucking the wrong oil in can cause all sorts of bother you really don’t need.
