Ibacheck AAT088 rechargeable breathalyser – auto flow detect & auto clean (B&W)
Looking for a simple, no-nonsense way to check your blood alcohol level before you get behind the wheel or head home after a night out? The compact iBACheck AAT088 is aimed at folk who want a reliable, easy-to-use tester that doesn’t faff about. It’s small enough to slip in a pocket, runs from a detachable 3.7V Li‑ion battery and gives a quick read on a clear LED display.
What it does
The device measures breath alcohol with a semiconductor sensor and can show results in four units: ‰ BAC, %BAC, mg/100mL or mg/l. It’s got an auto flow detect feature so it checks you’re blowing steadily for a consistent sample, and an auto clean routine that burns off oxide on the sensor after it’s been stored — both handy for keeping readings dependable.
Why this is handy
- Fast readings in seconds — perfect for a quick check before driving or deciding whether it’s safe to travel.
- Auto flow detect cuts down on false readings from weak or intermittent blows.
- Auto cleaning helps maintain sensitivity if it hasn’t been used for a while — ideal for occasional users.
- Memory stores up to 10 results, so you can spot trends over an evening.
- Compact and light — great for keeping in a glovebox or bag without any faff.
Quick specification and important notes
Range: 0.08–1.99 ‰BAC (0.008–0.199 %BAC, 8–199 mg/100mL, 0.04–1.00 mg/l). The unit will display zero for readings below 0.08 ‰ to avoid false alarms from mouth alcohol or environmental odours. Accuracy is approximately ±0.018 %BAC. Breath sampling requires a continuous blow of about 5 seconds and the device cycles in roughly 25 seconds between tests.
Battery and accessories: Detachable 3.7V Li‑ion battery (charge with a 5V 2A charger); a full charge gives around 200 tests. Supplied with 8 mouthpieces and a charge cable. Device dimensions are about 11 x 4.6 x 2 cm and it weighs around 40 g (packaged weight approx 170 g).
How to get sensible readings
To avoid misleading results, rinse your mouth and wait at least 15 minutes after drinking, smoking or using mouthwash before testing. If you test straight after drinking, readings can tumble from high to stable over roughly 15 minutes. How quickly breath alcohol falls to zero varies a lot between people — anything from a few minutes to several hours depending on how much was drunk and individual metabolism.
Alarm and units
The device will sound an alarm and flash a HI indicator if results exceed 0.50 ‰BAC by default (consider this a pre‑alert; legal limits vary across the UK). The alert level and the default unit can be adjusted — do note the default unit resets if the battery is removed.
Use cases and who it helps
- Drivers who want a quick check before setting off.
- Hosts or organisers wanting reassurance at parties or events.
- Individuals keeping an eye on their drinking over time.
- Small businesses screening staff after events or site visits as a precautionary measure.
Legal and safety note
This device provides an estimate of breath alcohol concentration for personal use only. It is not a forensic instrument and shouldn’t replace legal or medical advice. Always follow local laws on alcohol limits and driving. Read the user manual before first use and allow at least 15 minutes after drinking before testing. If the battery is completely discharged it may need a longer initial charge; check the battery condition if a charge does not revive the device.
All in all, a straightforward, pocketable breathalyser that helps you make safer choices — simple to use, quick to charge and handy to have when you’re not sure whether it’s safe to drive.
