iBACheck portable breathalyzer – alcohol test with 4-colour LCD, 4 units, low power and 350-test battery life
This neat little iBACheck is for anyone who wants a quick, straightforward check before driving or heading home. It uses a semiconductor sensor to give a result in seconds, shows it on a clear multi‑colour LCD and keeps a short history so you can compare readings. It isn’t police‑grade kit, but it’s a sensible, affordable way to ditch the guesswork and avoid those awkward, dodgy mornings.
What it does and why it helps
If you’re ever in doubt about whether to get behind the wheel, a quick test can save a lot of worry. The unit alerts you if a reading is over the set limit (the default flashes and beeps above 0.50 ‰ BAC), and you can change the alert level and default unit to match local limits or your personal preference. It also shows zero for very low traces (below roughly 0.08 ‰ BAC) to avoid false alarms from mouthwash or stray smells.
Important to know before testing
- Wait at least 15 minutes after drinking before testing – breath readings can be misleadingly high straight after a drink and then fall quickly as mouth alcohol clears.
- Blood alcohol takes around 15–30 minutes to stabilise after drinking, so your readings may shift during that time.
- Results are estimates. Don’t rely on this device as proof of fitness to drive or for legal proceedings.

When and how to use it
Great for social nights, weekend trips or any time you’re deciding between driving and getting a taxi. It’s small enough to pop in a bag or glovebox. If you use it often, keep spare mouthpieces and batteries to hand.
Limitations and legal note
The semiconductor sensor is quick and handy but it isn’t the same as calibrated police breathalysers. Results can vary with temperature, breathing technique and individual metabolism. Know the legal limit where you are — the UK limit is 0.8 ‰ (80 mg/100 mL) and Scotland’s limit is lower (0.5 ‰) — and don’t rely solely on a handheld device to decide whether it’s legal or safe to drive. This product is for guidance only; the manufacturer/distributor accepts no liability for decisions made after reading a result.
Testing immediately after a big drink isn’t ideal – wait about 15 minutes for a more reliable reading. And if you’re even slightly unsure, get a taxi or wait until you’re completely sober. Better safe than sorry.
